Even more interesting is how the debate about the swimsuit issue has evolved over the years. When it first launched in 1964, the question was one of taste, and whether or not a sports magazine so prominently featuring scantly-clad models was really acting in the interests of their readers (which it was) and the type of legitimate sports journalism Sports Illustrated prided itself on (which it wasn’t).

The great irony was that with the rise of feminism in America, the girls of the swimsuit issue were at once pariahs and heroes. They were derided by some for posing, accused of self-exploitation and setting back the cause of womandom several decades at a time, yet they were revered by others as bold and brave women, not afraid of their bodies and not afraid to celebrate beauty. That legions of men agreed with the latter didn’t hurt, either: the swimsuit issue was, for decades, SI’s biggest-selling issue of the year.

Of course, as time went on and the swimsuit issue just became part of the cultural background noise, the tremendous rise of internet publishing and various men’s magazine devoted to page after page of beautiful women in various states of dress, it became harder and harder to see what the fuss ever was in the first place. The SI ladies’ swimsuits may get slightly racier with each passing year, but it all looks tame considering what’s on the cover of even more hardcore publications like Maxim, FHM, Stuff, and the like (and that’s only counting the, shall we say, “mainstream” men’s magazines).

So with that, the new edition is out. Love it or hate it, the girls look great. Congratulations to each of them.

Training classes are held twice a week from January through March at Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym on San Jose in Jacksonville. Bailey’s has partnered with Professional Cheerleaders Alumni (PCA) as their official gym, offering discounted membership to their PCA members and the use of their state-of-the-art facilities for classes such as these. 

The Audition Prep Classes will include techniques needed for auditions such as turns, kicks, and basic dance steps. “What’s unique about our class is that it offers an inside edge that only alumni of professional teams can give. We have an exciting program lined up, including a photography session to give ladies tips at looking their best on camera (angles, etc.). A trainer from Bailey’s explained the importance of exercise and nutrition. We also have a makeup artist coming in to show the ladies how to apply colors and what compliments their skin tones best.”, says Darlene Clancy, PCA Board member and prep class instructor. 

Donna Windsor, the President of PCA is also teaching classes. Donna says, “We are able to sit down with the girls and give them one-on-one advice about auditions, what to expect, the layout of auditions for most professional teams, and how to make a positive first impression. That makes them feel more comfortable about the audition process and less nervous so they can focus on the combinations they have to learn.”

Some teams, in addition to using their cheering skills and cute outfits to warm up the crowd and cheer on their players, have been accused of using their cheerleaders to distract the opposing team. For example, the cheerleaders for the Tennessee Titans have been banned by the NFL from warming up or stretching outside of the opposing team’s locker rooms.

While there have been no specific reports of this type of behavior by the Colts cheerleaders, the Colts NFL cheerleader outfit definitely makes that a possibility. Its lack of coverage, tassels, fringes, and sparkling additions, can make the cheerleaders quite a distraction to anyone. This is especially true once you add in the sparkling personalities of the cheerleaders. Their bright smiles alone can be a distraction to all but the most devout football fan.

While the cheerleaders for the Colts wear many different outfits throughout the football season and the off season, the official game day Colts NFL cheerleader outfit consists of a blue sports bra type top combined with a short, white, fringed skirt. These are topped off with a matching white fringed vest and a silver rhinestone belt with the Colt’s horseshoe symbol on it.

Off season outfits worn for photo shoots and special appearances include swimsuits in Indianapolis Colts colors and short shorts with matching tops. All of these are decorated in some fashion with rhinestone horseshoes. While the cheerleaders may wear all different types of shoes throughout the course of their work, knee high boots have become some of the most popular to see on an NFL cheerleader.

While most professional football players will tell you that they don’t notice the cheerleaders or what they are wearing no matter what team the cheerleaders are from, the male football fans can almost always tell you who a cheerleader is cheering for based on their clothing.

It’s too bad that the New York Giants don’t have cheerleaders and it’s amazing that they’ve gone so far without an official NFL cheerleading squad. I consider cheerleaders to be essential to a team’s spirit and morale beacuse they energize the team’s fans. At least the Green Bay Packers have unofficial cheerleaders that come from colleges to cheer for them. Amazing the Green Bay Packers Cheerleaders are for their ability to endure such harsh weathers to cheer in.

Even if the New England Patriots lose, at least the Patriots have left the stadium with something that the New York Giants don’t have and that is the vibrant, energetic New England Patriots cheerleaders. But I’m pretty positive that the Patriots will win, given such support from their talented Patriots Cheerleaders

Now, not much mention is made of Ms. Warner’s football allegiances in her early days (she does admit to being a pretty big fan of her current employer nowadays, though), and stories about “local person connected to major event” are a dime a dozen. But statistically speaking, the odds of Warner not only being a cheerleader, but also a cheerleader for the geographically nearest professional football team, and backing that squad all the way to a Super Bowl, are really quite astounding.

Odds of being an NFL cheerleader: 440 / 301,000,000

Odds, among NFL cheerleaders, of being a New England Patriots cheerleader: 24 / 440

Odds, by most Vegas sports books, of Patriots making Super Bowl XLII: .43 / 1

Not a sure thing among the lot of them, and the final tally is staggering: the odds of Julie Warner, the pride of the nation’s oldest seaport, ever cheering the New England Patriots in a Super Bowl work out to 1 in 1,702,910,000,000,000 - and that’s just among Americans. If the denominators are changed to reflect worldwide populations, her chances were suddenly reduced to 1 in 1,353,940,000,000,000,000.

By way of comparison, the average person’s odds of a being part of a few other long-shot events are as follows:

Odds of catching a foul ball at a baseball game: 1 in 1,189

Odds of bowling a perfect game: 1 in 11,500

It was October 18^th 1992 and I was all of two years old. My parents were huge San Francisco 49er fans. I think that they figured that there was no time like the present to send their son down that same path. With that in mind they bought tickets for the three of us to go to the 49ers/Falcons game.

Now, I don’t remember much of the game. I think the 49ers won, but that was irrelevant to my two-year-old self. This is not to say I was not thoroughly engrossed in the football experience, I just focused on something other than the game. I loved the “sparkly girls,” as I named them. I asked my mom about them, “How did they get down on the field?” “What was their job?” “Why were they so pretty?” I had fallen in love with the “Gold Rush Squad.”

I was so in love that when the game ended and the Gold Rush Squad left, I cried. I cried and cried and cried. I complained to my mom that I wanted them to come back…right now. I cried myself to sleep and that was that.

From then on I watched the 49ers games in order to catch a glimpse of the “sparkly girls.” My trip to Candlestick did exactly what my parents had hoped it would, it ignited a passion.

As I became older I realized something, there was more to football than cheerleaders! In spite of this, I still hold a special place in my heart for the 49er cheerleaders, without them I probably would not be the football fan that I am today.
