chicago honey bears cheerleadersThey stand as one of the oldest and most storied franchises in all of sports, and their last Super Bowl champion ranks among the greatest teams ever assembled for any athletic purposes since the dawn of competitive sports. Their stadium is a federally protected landmark and their fans are among the most iconic in the world.

And yet, for all that, the Chicago Bears are one of but six NFL teams without their own cheerleading squad. Some would argue that the hateful Chicago weather (played outdoors at that) would be prohibitive to dancing and merriment; others would argue that the Bears are rarely a team worth celebrating; still others would say there simply aren’t that many attractive and able women in the Windy City. The first two theories are irrelevant – as anyone who’s ever been to Philadelphia can tell you – and the third is just plain ignorant. So what gives?

As it turns out, the Monsters of the Midway actually did have an official cheer squad from the late 1970’s through the mid-1980’s. The Honey Bears kept up the crowd excitement through some very poor on-field seasons until, with the team at the height of its fame and power, the squad was notified prior to the Bears’ legendary mauling of the Patriots in Super Bowl XX that their collective contract would not be renewed for the 1986 season, nor for any season ever again.

No official stance was ever given for the squad’s disbanding, but consensus around Chicago is that the Honey Bears don’t stand a chance to return until the team is no longer owned by the McCaskey family. Given the vise grip the current ownership group has on the Bears, any Chicago cheerleading fans are advised not to hold their breath for the Chicago Honey Bears Cheerleaders. Or maybe just go to Bulls games instead.

    The Honey Bears are a BIG part of the Bears. With out them…..were missing the culture of our team.. :( BRING THEM BACK!!!!!!!

    I completely agree. Cheerleaders and football go hand in hand and being at the games you can totally feel the missing vibe that you get from the cheerleaders. My vote is to bring them back.
